I'm taking a break from wedding talk to share some

I'm taking a break from wedding talk to share some of my thoughts on recent events. As I wrestle with my thoughts, I know that I come from a place of privilege, as a middle class Asian living in a fairly multicultural city of Toronto. I wondered if I even have a right to complain, but I'm glad there is a movement to encourage discussion and not stay quiet.

It's easy to point fingers and say that racism isn't happening here, but racism against Asians started a long time ago (think head tax and Chinese exclusion act). I've definitely experienced racism growing up. I heard the "ching chang chong" jokes as a child in elementary school. I've gotten cat calls that were racially charged. I hate being asked, "but where are you REALLY from?" As if I don't actually belong here? I was born and raised in Toronto, thank you very much. So yes, I'm from here as much as you are.

I don't really think twice about any of this because it's so common it feels normal. Generally I don't live in fear, which I'm thankful for. But the events recently, and especially this last year, remind me that systemic racism is real and it's not right. It's this racism that killed those six women and harmed those elders.

My grandparents and my extended family came to North America for a better life. Hong Kong was expected to change over its government from British rule to China rule, and it meant a lot of civil unrest and uncertainty (exactly what you see in the news today). They were also poor. My mom would tell me of meals where she'd eat rice and soy sauce because that's all they had. They made a life for themselves here with hopes of freedom and prosperity, assimilating into a foreign culture. I see my family in the grandma that got assaulted, and in the women who got shot. This is not the life that they came here for. Honestly I'm quite saddened by all this.

I'm not one of those people who "use their platform" for social or political issues. But I decided to share my thoughts today in hopes it might resonate with some of you. I feel like covid has brought out the best and the worst in people. Maybe this is the wake up call we all needed. We can do better. We all can.

Hey beautiful Toronto people, the province has now adjusted the capacity limits for wedding ceremonies under our current grey zone. If you've been waiting to pull the trigger, now's the time to start getting your details in order. Receptions are still not allowed, however if you're simply looking to tie the knot, this is for you. Regulations can change quickly, so it's best to take action when the government gives it a green light.

"On the advice of the Chief Medical Officer of Health, the province is also adjusting capacity limits for weddings, funerals, and religious services, rites or ceremonies held in regions currently in the Grey-Lockdown level of the Framework. Effective Monday, March 15, 2021 at 12:01 a.m., weddings, funerals, and religious services, rites or ceremonies will be permitted to allow for up to 15 per cent total occupancy indoors, or up to 50 people outdoors."

I don't know about you, but I miss parties. I miss

I don't know about you, but I miss parties. I miss the dressing up, the excitement, the grandeur of it all, and mostly, I miss connecting with my peers. This vaccine rollout is slow as molasses, so it looks like it will be a while until we can gather in big groups again. But when we do, the parties will be EPIC.

I've been asked, what new trends during covid migh

I've been asked, what new trends during covid might continue after? Weddings and events are tactile things. You go somewhere to see, touch, experience and taste. You can't truly replace that experiential part of events.
.
What we've been doing with virtual events and sending kits out are just temporary substitutes, not replacements or new trends. Pop-up events for a small group are great for the time being, but it will never replace an epic party.
.
The only thing I think that may stay are intimate sized weddings. Pre-covid, weddings with under 50 people were my favourite. Now it's the new norm. I bet this will still be quite popular after covid. But beyond that, we need REAL events to come back.
